Portraits of Commedia dell'Arte

italy_for_webTake a journey back to 16th Century Italy when “Commedia dell’Arte” burst into the village squares, streets, courts and palaces. It didn’t take long for this art form to spread throughout Europe, with many of its elements persisting into present-day theater. The actors use masks, sounds, gestures, jokes, dramatic improvisations, storytelling and acrobatics to present a parody of society. Music, dance, witty dialogue, and all kinds of trickery and deception contribute to the comic effects. The focus is placed on physical business rather than on spoken text, so the art can be understood by all.
