AN Enews ENCORE (and why not? The show is THAT good)

It’s A Grand Night for Singing . . .

the moon is flying high,

and somewhere a bird

who is bound he’ll be heard,

is throwing his heart at the sky!

Oh man. Rodgers & Hammerstein knew how to write a song. Tony-winner Walter Bobbie knows how to package that glorious music. And VLT knows a good cabaret show when it sees one, which is why A Grand Night for Singing opened in the Pinkerton Theatre Friday. And it runs right through August 26. This is a glorious show - Jay Handelman at the Herald-Tribune reviewed it and he says MaryBeth Antoinette "shines" and Renee Cordonnier is "radiant". Mmmmmm, good words for wonderful performers. Completing the ensemble onstage are Niddy Zarour, Colleen Suduth and Shane Ferreira. It’s all under the inspired musical direction of the extraordinary Michael Sebastian. Of Michael, Handelman said "[he] leads a three-piece band onstage, [and] brings out some bright sounds, particularly in songs with strong harmonies."

And Footloose?

Why, you wonderful people! Thanks to all of you, our 26 summer stock performers played to full houses! Their four performances SOLD OUT. They were thrilled and gave it back in great and heartfelt performances. They’ve all left the theatre now - most had pulled out by Sunday. (In fact, Sandy Davisson and Duwain Hunt headed right off to vacations!) But happily, the cast and crew left some of their spirit and exuberance floating around in the ether at VLT.

Ah, we love to go NORTH to the beach . . .

. . . in the summer. Rehoboth Beach in Delaware that is! And for the second summer too. Last year, we were invited to bring our production of Greater Tuna up north for a number of performances as part of the Henlopen Theatre Project. And they liked us. So we’re back there right now - that is, about 12 VLT people are – though not your editor obviously. They are the cast, crew and musicians who make up the wonderful VLT Cabaret production of Always, Patsy Cline. And when they conclude their run, they’ll come back home to Venice and treat us all to three performances in the MainStage on August 24, 25 and 26, all at 8:00 p.m. If you’ve never seen this show at VLT, don’t miss it this time. Becky Holahan and Tamara Sipes are simply wonderful.

Oh! and Mr. Bill wants YOU . . .

. . . if you’re interested in joining VLT’s Scenery crew. We are recruiting an entirely new volunteer crew for afternoons. So for those of you who wanted to sign up before but didn’t like that 8:30 in the a.m. start time (and you editor hardly blames you . . . ) THIS is your opportunity at last (you always knew good things come to those of us who w-a-i-t-). You can sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast and get here after those annoying early morning people have left the building. This is also a great opportunity for high school students who are seeking an affiliation for their community service requirement. Subscriptions . . . better hurry up!

Just a few more weeks before single season tickets go on sale, so if you want to lock in a subscription for MainStage or Stage II before that time, now’s the time.
